Wernigerode Castle
Wernigerode Castle was originally a medieval fortress dating back to the 12th century, used by the German emperors for hunting trips. In the 16th century, the castle was expanded into a Renaissance fortress, which was severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War. It wasn't until the late 17th century that Count Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode had the castle ruins rebuilt into a romantic, Baroque residential palace in the form of a circular castle, which was further expanded in the following century.
The castle became a prime example of North German Historicism and has been partially open to the public since 1930. Two museum tours lead through over 40 rooms, some furnished in their original style, belonging to the German high nobility. The permanent exhibition is further enhanced by high-quality temporary exhibitions.
Access to the castle is only possible with a special permit, and there is no parking available. The quickest way to get there is by taking the Wernigerode Castle Railway or the tourist train. It's about a 20-minute walk.
